From a business mission to a major industrial investment: EEN helps bring vanadium battery production to Bulgaria

Bulgarian clean energy company Store Your Energy OOD has taken an important step towards establishing industrial-scale vanadium flow battery production in Bulgaria. With the support of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Stara Zagora, part of the Enterprise Europe Network, the company identified an international technology partner and transformed an initial business contact into a strategic agreement with significant economic and technological potential.

Store Your Energy develops advanced energy storage solutions and sees vanadium flow batteries as a promising technology for large-scale applications and long-duration energy storage. These systems are particularly suitable for electricity grids and renewable energy projects that require the reliable storage of electricity generated from solar and wind sources.

In response to the growing European demand for flexible and sustainable energy storage solutions, the company set an ambitious objective: to establish vanadium battery production in Bulgaria and position the country as a manufacturing base serving both the Bulgarian and the wider European market.

Achieving this objective required much more than finding a conventional supplier of manufacturing equipment. Store Your Energy needed an international strategic partner with proprietary vanadium battery technology, proven industrial manufacturing capacity and the expertise required to facilitate technology transfer and establish a new production facility.

Identifying a suitable partner beyond the company’s existing network of contacts presented a significant challenge. The planned cooperation also required coordination with investment institutions, government representatives and industrial zone operators in Bulgaria.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry – Stara Zagora was familiar with the company’s ambitions and informed its management about a sponsored business mission organised as part of Energy Taiwan 2025. The mission was organised by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), a partner organisation of the Enterprise Europe Network, and provided access to international companies operating in renewable energy, battery manufacturing and energy storage technologies.

The Network’s experts assessed the mission as highly relevant to Store Your Energy’s development plans and supported the company throughout the application and preparation process. They also facilitated communication with the Taiwan Trade Center in Sofia. This enabled the company to join the mission with a clearly defined objective: to identify a technology partner capable of supporting the establishment of vanadium battery production in Bulgaria.

During the business mission, Store Your Energy established contact with XinXin Vanadium and Titanium Co., a Chinese company with proprietary technology and extensive industrial experience in vanadium battery manufacturing. The two companies quickly recognised that their capabilities and strategic objectives were complementary and began discussing technology transfer and the establishment of production capacity in Bulgaria.

The Enterprise Europe Network continued to support the cooperation after the initial meeting. Maintaining communication and consistently following up on developments were particularly important, as the potential partnership involved advanced technology, a large-scale industrial investment and several stages of technical, commercial and institutional negotiations.

The cooperation led to the signing of an agreement between Store Your Energy OOD and XinXin Vanadium and Titanium Co. for the construction of a vanadium battery manufacturing plant in Bulgaria. The project is expected to create approximately 400 new jobs and strengthen the country’s position in the rapidly growing energy storage industry.

Under the agreement, Store Your Energy has also been appointed the official strategic partner of XinXin Vanadium and Titanium Co. for Bulgaria and the European Union. This opens up new opportunities for technology transfer, industrial cooperation and an expanded presence in the European energy storage market.

The success of Store Your Energy demonstrates how the Enterprise Europe Network continues to support innovative companies beyond the initial establishment of business contacts. By combining internationalisation, innovation, technology transfer, sustainability and scale-up services, the Network helps ambitious companies build long-term strategic partnerships, attract investment and contribute to sustainable economic development in Bulgaria and across Europe.
